Legault was born to a poor village family in a town in rural Bern. Unlike the majority of his siblings, who mostly enlisted in Bern's military, Legault didn't show any desire in a soldier's life nor much of a talent for outright battle. Instead he began stealing things from a young age and soon came to be known as the village kleptomaniac, though it didn't get him many friends. Restless, he left his family to travel as a teenager, bored by village life. He perfected his thieving skills during these travels and was often hired for small jobs.

As an adult, he encountered the Black Fang, a small mercenary organization headed by a man named Brendan Reed, while in a town in Bern. They were disposing of a corrupt lord in the area, and interested, Legault approached them, offering his services as a thief. Recognizing his skill, and needing more members, they cautiously let him join.

The early Black Fang may have been a group of assassins, but its members shared bonds of friendship and had a strong sense of righteousness. Legault befriended the leader's sons, Lloyd and Linus Reed, amongst other members. Legault started out with petty thief-work, but learned how to use a knife, and moved up in rank. Though Legault never achieved the kind of martial skills that Lloyd and Linus did, he was resourceful, cunning, and had steady hands, and performed assassin work adeptly. His job in the Black Fang was "cleaning house" - killing members who betrayed the Fang. Legault stayed with the Fang as it grew, and his skill increased to a point where he was considered second only to the Four Fangs, the most elite of the organization.

All of this changed when Nergal, a powerhungry and evil villain, sent out one of his morphs (humanlike creations) to slowly take over the Black Fang in order to gain power in Bern. This morph, a woman named Sonia, seduced Brendan Reed and married him. As Nergal's puppet, she controlled the Black Fang and slowly replaced trusty Black Fang members with Nergal's minions. Legault formerly only killed those who betrayed the Fang, but after Nergal's arrival he began to be ordered to kill those who were wounded or had no taste for killing. The turning point for Legault was when he killed a woman named Aesha - someone he had worked with for years - because she was injured and could no longer work as an assassin. Realizing that Aesha did not deserve to die, and beginning to grow apart from the now-corrupted Black Fang, Legault decided to leave.

Near the Dragon's Gate on the Dread Isle, Legault snuck away in the midst of battle. There Eliwood of Pherae, fighting against Nergal's troops, bumped into Legault. Upon realizing Legault was leaving the Black Fang because of Nergal's influence, Eliwood asked for his help, as Legault could provide inside information. Legault agreed, but only because he liked Eliwood, and mentioned he would only stay as long as he felt safe.

Joining Eliwood's group would prove to be a good thing for Legault. Not only did he help them in terms of his skills and information in defeating Nergal, but he also befriended many of the people fighting with Eliwood, amongst them a deserter knight from Bern. The deserter, a wyvern rider named Heath, was wary of Legault, but Legault befriended him and declared it "friendship between fugitives". They grew close, and Legault admitted he cared a lot for Heath, as embarrassed as this made the wyvern rider. [ Their relationship is fairly open for interpretation, but I consider it romantic. ]

Nino, Sonia's supposed daughter, had also escaped from Nergal and was with Eliwood. Nino was one of the few who came with Nergal that Legault actually cared for, and she considered him her "uncle". Legault loves Nino as if she were his actual niece, and she is one of the few with which he can talk about the Black Fang.

When Legault appears in Memento Eden, Eliwood and co. have already defeated Nergal.

Part of what makes Legault so interesting are the multiple facets and levels of his personality. On the outside, he is candid, generally friendly, and somewhat cynical, but he hides a softer side.

Legault does not hesitate to strike up a conversation with people who catch his eye and will typically either make some kind of witty or sarcastic remark, or simply ask "who are you?". Legault is quirky and will do things on a whim, as the only reason he decided to come with Eliwood was because he liked him, and tells him that he will "only help as long as he feels safe".

He is generally amiable and social, even to strangers, though he does keep on his guard (being trained as a thief, and all.) This friendly demeanor doesn't really change around people, regardless of their social status - he doesn't differentiate his manner towards a knight as opposed to a thief. Legault is rarely angry. Legault's not afraid to speak his mind and doesn't hesitate to ask questions. He's usually quite perceptive about people - he's able to tell just by looking at Heath that he is not a typical deserter, and can sense people's attitudes and feelings fairly accurately.

His sense of humor is somewhat dry and occasionally insulting to himself or others (he calls Jaffar "creepy" and himself "useless in battle") and he likes to use his wit to catch people off their guard or make them uneasy or embarassed. For this reason, he seems to be attracted towards uptight or reserved people, or ones who initially dislike him.

He can be affectionate, especially to Nino, and he often mentions the strong feelings of kinship he had for the former Black Fang. Legault doesn't have much of an ego, though he was considered second only to the strongest Four Fangs in the Black Fang.
